If you've been curious about Reiki but aren't quite sure what happens in a session, you're not alone. Many people come to their first appointment with a mix of excitement and uncertainty — and that's completely normal. As a Reiki Master practitioner based in Milton Keynes, I've welcomed hundreds of clients through the door, and the most common thing they say afterwards is: "I wish I'd come sooner."
Here's exactly what to expect, from the moment you arrive to how you might feel in the days that follow.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing therapy that works by channelling universal life force energy to support the body's natural ability to heal. It's deeply relaxing and can help with stress, anxiety, emotional blocks, and physical tension. You don't need to believe in anything for it to work — you just need to be open to the experience.

Before Your Session
- Wear comfortable clothing — you remain fully clothed throughout. Loose, natural fabrics work best.
- Avoid a heavy meal in the hour before your appointment.
- Come with an open mind — there's no need to prepare anything specific. You might like to set a loose intention (e.g. "I'd like to feel calmer") but it's not required.
- Arrive a few minutes early so you can settle in and have a brief chat before we begin.
What Happens During the Session
Your session at Clarity of Sight in Milton Keynes will typically last around 60 minutes. Here's how it unfolds:
- Initial consultation — We'll have a short conversation about what's brought you in, any areas of focus, and answer any questions you have.
- You lie down fully clothed on a comfortable treatment couch in a calm, relaxed space. You will remove your shoes for comfort.
- Gentle hand placements — I'll place my hands lightly on or just above different areas of your body, working through a series of positions from head to feet.
- You simply relax — Most clients feel warmth, tingling, or a deep sense of calm. Some drift into a light sleep. There's nothing you need to do.
- Closing and grounding — At the end, we'll gently bring you back to full awareness and I'll share any observations from the session.
What Might You Feel?
Every experience is unique, but common responses include:
- Deep relaxation or sleepiness
- Warmth or gentle tingling in different parts of the body
- Emotional release — sometimes tears, sometimes joy
- A sense of lightness or clarity
- Vivid imagery or a meditative state, some people see different colours too.
Some clients feel the effects immediately; for others, shifts unfold over the following 24–72 hours. If you're curious about combining crystals with your session, see our guide to Crystal Reiki.
After Your Session
- Drink plenty of water — energy work can be gently detoxifying.
- Rest if you need to — don't schedule a hectic afternoon straight after.
- Notice what comes up — changes in mood, sleep, or energy levels in the days following are all part of the process.
- Journal if you feel called to — many clients find it helpful to note any thoughts, feelings, or dreams after a session.
Is One Session Enough?
A single session can be profoundly beneficial, but like most holistic therapies, Reiki tends to build over time. Many clients book a course of three sessions to begin with, which allows for deeper, more sustained shifts. We can discuss what might work best for you during your consultation.
